well the H.E.A.T. conference is over. this conference has affected me and the summer research in several ways:
(a) we have come out of this conference with like five or six more contacts to include in our research; two organizations we had basically given up on getting interviews from, we have been guaranteed interviews with, simply by physically speaking with someone from those places (one of whom found us because she heard someone else at the conference talking about our research)
(b) the director of Courtney's House (washington, d.c.), a service provider, has encouraged us to creatively alter our interview questions, so we'll be looking over those again
(c) it has COMPLETELY overwhelmed me; but that's good. it has encouraged me to revamp the project i am working on, on a presentation/tool kit for high schools on trafficking in the U.S. (more on that later)
(d) it has educated me in whole new ways on the issue of the trafficking of boys
(e) it has made Addie and I think more about what agencies (law enforcement, child protective services, rape centers, courts, probation, etc.) need to be involved in the services provided to survivors besides ngos themselves and how those agencies can/need to work together, generally and in richmond particularly
(f) it has opened our eyes and brought our attention to more laws and policies that are being proposed and that need to be proposed to aid in this fight: safe harbor laws, in california the CASE act, etc.
(g) a serious new respect for Jada Pinkett Smith and Will Smith; they were there and Jada spoke some serious wisdom to everyone and Will was just sitting there supportive.
as you can see this is a lot to think about in a lot of different areas. it's going to take a while to process it all...
i'm going to leave it here for now. here's another california picture:
